⚠️ Important Pre-Installation Rule: Do not upload full marketplace packages directly to WordPress. If you downloaded a .zip package containing documentation, child themes, and demo data, extract it locally first and locate only the installable software ZIP file (e.g., plugin-name.zip).
Part 1: How to Install a WordPress Theme
Method A: Upload via WordPress Admin Dashboard (Fastest)
Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.
Navigate to Appearance → Themes from the left sidebar.
Click the Add New Theme button located at the top of the interface.
Click Upload Theme, then click Choose File.
Select the verified theme ZIP file from your computer and click Install Now.
Once the unpacking process is complete, click Activate or Live Preview.
Method B: Direct SFTP / FTP Server Upload
Recommended when server timeout limits or maximum upload size errors prevent web-based uploads.
Extract the theme ZIP package onto your local computer.
Connect to your hosting server using an FTP client like FileZilla, Cyberduck, or WinSCP.
Navigate to the target directory: /wp-content/themes/
Upload the unzipped theme folder directly into themes. Confirm that the path matches /wp-content/themes/{theme-folder}/style.css.
Return to your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Themes, and click Activate.
Part 2: How to Install a WordPress Plugin
Method A: Upload via WordPress Admin Dashboard
Log in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.
Navigate to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
Click the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.
Click Choose File and browse to your plugin ZIP archive.
Click Install Now and wait for the upload to unpack.
Click Activate Plugin to enable the functionality.
Method B: SFTP / FTP Direct Upload
Extract your plugin ZIP archive locally.
Open your FTP client and navigate to: /wp-content/plugins/
Upload the unzipped plugin folder into this directory.
Log into your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
Locate your newly transferred plugin and click Activate.
Part 3: Advanced Methods (cPanel & WP-CLI)
cPanel File Manager Extraction
Best for fast extraction of large multi-megabyte archives:
Log in to cPanel → File Manager.
Go to public_html/wp-content/plugins/ or themes/.
Click Upload and upload the ZIP archive directly.
Right-click the uploaded ZIP and select Extract.
Delete the remnant ZIP archive after extraction.
WP-CLI Command Line
For developers, system admins, and SSH users:
# Install and activate a plugin
wp plugin install /path/to/plugin.zip --activate
# Install and activate a theme
wp theme install /path/to/theme.zip --activate
Troubleshooting Common Installation Errors
1. "The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet."
Cause: You uploaded the master download archive instead of the installable theme file. Solution: Unzip your download on your computer. Look inside the extracted folders for the actual theme file (e.g., theme-name.zip) and upload only that specific file.
2. "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini."
Cause: Your web hosting limits the size of files that can be uploaded via HTTP. Solution: Increase the limits in your .htaccess or php.ini configuration:
Cause: A previous installation or failed update left files in the directory. Solution: Connect via FTP or cPanel File Manager, open /wp-content/plugins/ or /wp-content/themes/, delete the conflicting old directory, and re-run the installation.
